Actress Taniya Chatterjee has finally broken her silence on the defamation row involving Indian cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal, and she says the whole thing was just an innocent share that got blown way out of proportion.
According to Taniya, there was no drama, no intention, and definitely no plan to damage anyone’s image. She insists she only mentioned a casual compliment during a conversation and never imagined it would spiral into legal trouble. But once the internet grabbed the story, things escalated quickly.

A “cute” compliment that sparked chaos
Taniya explained that the now-viral conversation happened during a discussion related to the IPL. She revealed that Yuzvendra had replied to her Instagram stories several times and had once called her “cute” in a direct message. For her, it was just a normal interaction.
She said there is nothing wrong with someone complimenting another person. In her words, it was simply a casual message. She also emphasised that she continues to hold immense respect for the cricketer, adding that he has done a lot for the country and she will always admire him for that.
The actress further clarified that she shared the message “in an extremely innocent way.” She mentioned that she likes compliments, which is why she casually brought it up while talking. She insisted that she never tried to portray it negatively or create controversy.
But the situation took a turn during the second week of IPL when a video of Taniya interacting with photographers went viral. In the clip, she was seen showing her phone screen and claiming that the cricketer had replied to her stories multiple times. She also repeated that he had called her “cute.”
Shock over defamation case
Soon after the video spread across social media, the controversy exploded. Yuzvendra responded by filing a defamation case, which left Taniya stunned. She said she was shocked because she believes she never defamed him in any way.
According to her, she actually praised him while talking about the message. She maintained that there was no defamatory statement and that she only shared a compliment. She also repeated that she continues to praise him even now, which, in her view, makes the defamation claim confusing.
Taniya stressed that she did not intend to harm his reputation. She believes the situation grew bigger due to social media attention rather than anything she deliberately said.
